Recovery Console - and other recovery items

 

 

Recovery console

To install recovery console:

From the server CD run e:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

special drivers (SCSI) have to be on a floppy disk for recovery console to use them, this floppy is needed along with the ERD.

 

Some Recovery console commands

to get help for a command type HELP and the command you need help with (>help enable) this will give you the proper syntax for the command.

1. Listsvc - reads the SYSTEM registry hive and brings up all the availabel serveces, associated drivers, and their start types. This hive is located in %system-root%\system32\config directory.

2. Enable - for enableing services.

3. Disable - for diableing services.

4. Set - Controls various levels of access to the machine, these have to be turned on through either "Group Policy" or "Security Configuration Tool".

a. AllowWildCards - Turns on wild card support for commands, default does not allow this.
b. AllowAllPaths - Allows access byond the system files and folders to all files and folders on the machine, default only allows access to system files and folders.
c. AllowremovabelMedia - Allows files to be copied to the removable media, default allows only coping files from removable media.
d. NoCopy Prompt - turns off the prompt warning when overwriting files, default has warning.

Other recovery items

After w2k has been install and before any other programs are install, run ERD, Emergency Repair Disk, (which is under the Backup utility). This will require one blank floppy disk.

 

 

Event Logs

settings for Event logs:

1. Size should be set to 4096, except for Security which should be set for 20096
2. Overwrite events older than 7 days should be used.

 

 

Instalation of Windows 2000 (w2k)

 

 

items that should be done

1. install Recover Console

a. turn on set commands - in MMC open your "Group Policy Snap-in" then go to Local Computer Policy | Computer Configuration | Windows Settings | Local Policies | Security Settings, look for the "Recovery Console Section" and enable it.

2. generate auto-logon display name should be "Otto Logon"

3. change Administrators user to Nature

1. all tape drives are to be set up so that they either print, or E-mail a status every time it does a backup
